Curated Collaborative: Studio Smithson Scholar's!

What is inspiration? How do we find it? Well, if you are still a kid then most of the world around you can be inspirational. If you take a moment to really look at what is around, this could be inspiration. When you are designing something, there are no rules! But, if you want something to be interesting, it is important to stick with one rule of design… interesting things come in three. So, even if it you are just picking out your clothes to wear for some occasion, your outfit is not complete without a third item, like a scarf, belt or jacket. In this design session both girls used simply three elements to compose their designs. The color, composition, and context were completely altered. Before, these three things were not overly interesting by themselves, but now have come together in a new colorful way. When the girls had control of the camera we discussed angles of capturing an object in photography, and how this can influence the composition. It was impressive how Helen and Samantha both had a really good grasp on what they wanted in their design. While observing them photographing objects, it was evident that the wheels of creativity where turning inside their heads. In Helen's design, she used a combination of drawing and photography. And, Samantha's design intent involved adding and subtracting elements using only photography. The feeling of displaying or wearing your own art, gives quite a sense of accomplishment! Here at Studio Smithson, inspiration is seeing things from a new perspective, and using what you already have in an imaginative way.

Well, the Studio doors opened once again, this time to some talented little individuals who may very well grow up to be fashion designers. This design session was structured with a little scavenger hunt for inspiration. Using the camera as a tool we focused on capturing organic and non organic objects. Then we went to work in the Studio drawing and brainstorming on ways we could create depth, dimension, and repetition in our design. The intention was to curate a design using layers with transparency and combine the organic and non organic imagery. Oh, our little Studio Smithson mascots enjoyed snuggling with the girls on their break! Both Sofia and Skyler seemed very proud to see their finished products!
